Lighthouse

Introduction

Marado Lighthouse Marado island is in the southernmost part of Korea and can be reached by 30 minute sailing from Sanisu-dong.
It is such a low and flat island that it looks like it could be swept by the wave if a typhoon comes. It is attracted and loved by tourists for being in the southernmost Korea and fishing Opaleyes at the best point ever. Marado Lighthouse, located at the end of green grass and facing the sea, is used as an aid to navigation for vessels sailing East China Sea and Jejudo’s south waters. It is Korea’s ‘Cape of Good Hope’.
Marado Lighthouse was first built in March 1915 during the Japanese colonial period and then newly reconstructed in March 1987 into a white octagon concrete structure with 16 meter height. The light characteristic is flashing every 10 seconds and it can be identified at the distance of 48km away. Marado island itself is designated as Natural Heritage and has beautiful natural environment. Marado touring can be done by walking or by renting a bike. One hour would be sufficient to go around the island.
Tourist attractions include Mara branch school of Gapa Elementary School, which has only one student at the moment, the plaque that marks Korea’s southernmost point, Aegiupgaedang Temple with a sad legend, Janggun Rock, Chocolate Museum, and a diner selling Chinese food that was opened because of a commercial film in which a Chinese food delivery guy rows a boat in Marado sea and shouts out “Who ordered Jajangmyun?”
